Margot Ware Shylo Healthcare

Owner of Shylo Home Care for 25+ years!

I am Margot Ware, RN BScN, GNC (c), the present Director/Owner of Shylo Home Healthcare. I initially joined the Home Healthcare company as a Companion in 1986.

Impressed by both Betty and Linda's home nursing and palliative care of my terminally ill mother and later my aged grandfather, I felt that I literally stumbled into my vocation through their wonderful example.

I started my educational journey towards a Registered Nursing degree while continuing to work as a Home Healthcare Aide at Shylo. Ten years later, when Betty and Linda decided to retire, I took over the company that she'd grown to love.

FAQs

How is companion care different from personal care or nursing care?

Companions provide non-medical support like companionship, transportation, errands, meal prep, and housekeeping. Personal Care is delivered by trained Home Support Workers (HSWs) who assist with tasks such as personal hygiene, rehab exercises, and medication support. These professionals often have formal healthcare training or international nursing experience and may be called PSWs, HCAs, RCAs, or other similar titles across Canada.

Will the same companion visit every time?

At Shylo, we prioritize Consistency of Care by scheduling the same Companion or Caregiver whenever possible, reducing stress and confusion for senior clients. Most clients need just one or two Companions, depending on their weekly schedule, allowing for a balanced team approach to meet all needs. While some may initially hesitate about having two Caregivers, many find they complement each other’s strengths, like cooking or organizing. Consistency is best achieved with a regular schedule, as frequent changes or short notice can make it more challenging.

Does insurance cover companion care services?

Some insurances in Canada do cover in-home support. We encourage each client to speak with their insurance provider directly to confirm what their specific policy covers. We find it’s always best to have confirmation of insurance coverage in writing to avoid misunderstandings.

What activities can the companion help with during visits?

Companions provide non-medical support like companionship, transportation, meal prep, errands, and even pet care, while ensuring client safety and calling for help in emergencies if needed. They can also organize social events or enjoy one-on-one activities like board games. For more advanced care, such as personal care or medication assistance, a Home Support Worker may be required. Shylo Nursing Supervisors offer complimentary in-home assessments to create tailored Care Plans.
